Hitachi Vantara published collateral
Here are examples of public-facing collateral that I edited and published for Hitachi Vantara. I cannot share the confidential build guides.
Cisco and Hitachi Adaptive Solutions for CI for SAP HANA – Virtualization and Global-Active Device Best Practices Guide
Use this to design and implement your Cisco and Hitachi Adaptive Solutions for Converged Infrastructure. It has a virtual server infrastructure using Cisco application-centric infrastructure with the global-active device on the Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform 5000 series.

Hitachi Storage Management Software with Cisco for VMware vSphere Best Practices Guide
Simplify management of converged infrastructure components using VMware vSphere Web Client plug-ins developed for management of vendor-specific elements, such as compute, network, and storage.
(Those who like to search under the hood will see that this document was not created using Adobe FrameMaker. I would be happy to share how and why, showing that I will do what is necessary to get something published.)
Integrate Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform with VMware Cloud Foundation Reference Architecture Guide
Use this reference architecture guide to design and configure your Hitachi Unified Compute Platform RS system, integrating the following:
- Hitachi Unified Compute Platform HC
- Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform (optional)
- VMware Cloud Foundation
Deployment Options for Red Hat OpenShift on Hitachi Unified Compute Platform CI with Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform Family Reference Architecture Guide
Use these Red Hat OpenShift deployment options for Hitachi Unified Compute Platform in a bare metal, virtualized, or mixed bare metal environment with virtualized OpenShift.
(This was the last document I published before being told my position was being eliminated. I updated and maintained the Adobe FrameMaker files.)
Microsoft PowerPoint presentations at Hitachi Vantara
These were created for team meetings.
I created this PowerPoint deck to introduce myself during an online meeting in January 2020.
Technical Writing and the Web
I presented this in person at an all-hands meeting in Santa Clara in 2012 within the first year of my starting. Through my time there, it is one of two presentations I used to coach the engineers on how to create better documents. This document is more “entry level” to set a base to build upon.
Other items created while at Hitachi Vantara
Oracle composable all NVMe architecture solution diagram
Normally, the engineers I worked with at Hitachi Vantara were to create their own graphics for documents, updated based on my editorial review. In one case, time was short and the engineer was having issues making the text and lines readable in the graphic. So, I edited the Microsoft Visio diagrams. This is the result.
Select the graphic to see it at full size.
Solutions and Cloud Engineering Technical Paper Template
I created this Microsoft Word document template (dotx) file to standardize styles when writing document. This made content imports to Adobe FrameMaker for document publication quicker. The same style names were used in this template file as in the FrameMaker files.
While not posted here, I also created the FrameMaker files used to create the PDF files. The trade dress in these published files matched Hitachi Vantara marketing standards at the time of publication. The PDF collateral examples above were all created from FrameMaker files I created.
Washington Mutual Universal Workstation client-server network documents
I was the only technical writer for Distributed Services Administration (when internal Washington Mutual) and Networkstation Design and Development (when outsourced to IBM Global Services). As a contractor, I survived the initial outsourcing before more functions were pulled to Boulder, Colorado.
The Washington Mutual universal workstations and servers were IBM equipment using IBM OS/2 for the operating system. These workstations ran teller operations and various loan underwriting software.
There was a wide variety of documents I created:
- Branch network wiring standards
- Server and workstation build-out instructions
- Installation and testing instructions.
This was in addition to the following activities:
- Maintaining the bank-wide server name list for the OS/2 network
- Help project managers with RFQs and other documents
- Travel to Florida to participate in practice installations in a training center and branch.
These two example documents, both over 20 years old, had style issues determined by some of the DSA-NDD documents going to contractors who entered them into ASCII text-based documentation systems.
My current résumé only goes back to 2000, so it does not list my work as a contractor at Washington Mutual. However, I have these and more documents from that time.
Universal Workstation Platform System Management Tools
This is a short document of miscellaneous system information information. It was one of the earlier documents I created, before ISSC became IBM Global Services.
Networkstation Design and Development Off-Site IBM 330 Fileserver Preparation
This document described how to prepare an IBM 330 fileserver for use in a branch. This release was a later document.
Boeing Commercial Airplanes
SETL Dataset Development Software Tools
This was one of two technical documents I wrote for the 777 program to create system functional tests while they were still designing the plane.
Specifies a plan to develop the model 777 dataset development software tools. Defines deliverable items, how they are to be developed and verified, and required documentation.Abstract from SETL Dataset Development Software Tools
These datasets were to define the manual system functional tests needed to verify proper construction and operation of the airplane. A separate document, also written by me, defined how to create automated system functional tests.
When working as a contractor for Boing, the Everett plant controlled system functional tests as drawings or datasets (even if they are words). The Renton plant controlled system functional tests as documents. Hence, the use of the word “dataset” in the title.
After I left my contract position with Functional Test Engineering, I found out from colleagues that this plan was not adopted. Boeing decided to not use Simplified English Test Language, making some of the components unnecessary. There were also other decisions made that changed the plan, which they didn’t go into (and I didn’t need to know).
No confidentiality was placed on this paper when released.
Tic-tac-toe, diversion and strategy
This is a made-up example to show that I can do other types of writing. The idea behind this is tell a reasonably bright adult that has somehow managed to avoid learning about tic-tac-toe how to play that game.
Since this is about playing a game, I took an intentionally more light and breezy approach.
